PHILADELPHIAMayor Jim Kenney, Managing Director Michael DiBerardinis, Commissioner of Parks & Recreation Kathryn Ott Lovell and other City officials joined children and staff at Max Myers Recreation Center in Northeast Philadelphia to officially open the City’s pools for the 2016 season.
“I am excited to kick off the public pool season today, one of our City’s most cherished traditions,” said Mayor Kenney “Our public pools are great amenities that provide fun, safe, and healthy opportunities for Philadelphians of all ages to stay cool and enjoy in neighborhoods throughout the City.”

The Department of Parks & Recreation operates more than seventy pools every summer in neighborhoods across the City.  Residents can find listings for pools by neighborhood at www.phila.gov/pools.  The department encourages residents contact their neighborhood pools for days and times of open swim, family swim and adult swim, as well as swim lessons and swim team activities.

“The City employs approximately 800 people each summer who work as pool maintenance aides and lifeguards” said managing Director Michael DiBerardinis “These jobs are a great way for some young people and adults to earn some additional income during the summer months while keeping our pools safe, clean and ready to use.”

When I was growing up in Mayfair, Max Myers was my neighborhood pool.  For anyone who remembers being a kid in the Northeast back then, this pool and others like it were vibrant and thriving places we could play during the summer,”  said Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell. “There are more than seventy public pools across Philadelphia that are still wonderful resources for communities, but after decades of disinvestment and neglect, they’re a little worse for wear.  But thanks to the leadership of Mayor Kenney and City Council, we will soon be able to invest an unprecedented half a billion dollars into our parks, rec centers and libraries to make them beautiful, safe places for our children once again.”

“I’m thrilled to kick off the swim season at Max Myers pool in my district, and look forward to a great summer!  Our Parks and Rec facilities are so important year round, but especially in the summer, when our playgrounds and pools make it much easier for Philadelphia’s kids and families to have active, safe, and fun summer vacations” said Councilwoman Maria Quiñones-Sanchez.
